Next Section of Widening Project Begins- Motorists traveling I-35 between FM 310 south of Hillsboro and FM 1304 north of Abbott will see some changes beginning today, as signs and barricades go up in preparation for the next stage of the overall widening of Interstate 35.

Stage one of the new 4.5-mile-long project will be moving and widening the frontage roads along the highway, with the current two-way configuration becoming one-way on the new roads. Preparations are also being made for the addition of two new safety rest stop areas between Abbott and Hillsboro. After work on the frontage roads is completed, the mainlanes will be widened to three lanes in each direction, with new shoulders added. Dynamic signs with programmable messages will be installed over the highway, and the crossroads (FM 310, FM 1304 and Chatt Road) will be rebuilt under the bridges, adding more lanes and U-turn bays. Several ramps will be relocated, along with some bridge (overpass) widening and repair of the road surfaces leading up to the bridges. However, the overpasses do not need to be rebuilt, shortening the expected time required for project completion to a little over two years, with an estimated completion date in the fall of 2012.

TxDOT mobility coordinators will be working with the construction crews to coordinate any required lane closures with other sections of the overall project, as construction begins in those areas, to optimize traffic flow and increase safety in work areas. Plans are to keep daytime lane closures to a minimum, with a goal of keeping two lanes in each direction open at all times.

Contractor for this section of the I-35 project is W.W. Webber, LLC. Headquartered in Houston, Webber is currently completing the widening of I-35 in the section just south of Hillsboro, from SH 22 to FM 310. That section is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
