  1. Where can small businesses and new business start-ups get business counseling?
  2. Where can someone get local demographics and other statistics to use in a market analysis or marketing plan?
  3. Are there locations in Hillsboro that are recognized by the federal government as Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) locations for purposes of advantage in bidding on federal contracts?

Question: Where can small businesses and new business start-ups get business counseling?

Answer:

Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), which are sponsored by the federal Small Business Administration, offer free, confidential advice from trained business counselors on a variety of subjects. Examples include preparing a business plan, seeking financing, how to develop a marketing plan, etc. Advice is tailored to the particular business.

Hillsboro is in the service region for the SBDC office located on the campus of McLennan Community College in Waco. To discuss services or schedule an appointment, call 254-299-8141.

Question: Where can someone get local demographics and other statistics to use in a market analysis or marketing plan?

Answer:

The City of Hillsboro Marketing Office keeps various commonly-requested demographics and statistics on hand. Staff suggests checking the City’s web site, under Marketing and Development, for the topics that are routinely compiled and updated.

If a business does not find what it is looking for on the City web site, the Marketing Office welcomes a phone call (582-5776) or email (HEDC@hillsborotx.org) about other possible ways to obtain the desired information.

Question: Are there locations in Hillsboro that are recognized by the federal government as Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) locations for purposes of advantage in bidding on federal contracts?

Answer:

HUB zones are established based on the most recent census data. Based on the 2000 census, Hillsboro presently has a geographic area that is a recognized zone. To determine if your business address falls within that area, go to www.sba.gov/hubzone/ and follow the prompts.

HUB zone boundaries are subject to change when the 2010 census data is released.
