Mr. Bill Buckner, District 12 Representative for the Texas State Genealogical Society, Inc., will be the Installing Officer. Mr. Buckner is also the Manager of the Genealogical Center of the Waco-McLennan County Library, and has been a very popular guest speaker for HCGS. The incoming officers will be:

Membership runs from January thru December and is $18.00 per person or $25.00 for a family for one year. The HCGS publishes a quarterly, “Hill County Crossroads”, and maintains a Genealogy section in the Hillsboro City Library. The organization meets on the first Monday of every month usually in the meeting room in the Hill County Courthouse Annex located at 126 South Covington Street in Hillsboro.

The City Council will meet Tuesday February 21, 2012, 7:00 p.m. to act upon the Re-Plat according to the recommendations of the Commission.

(NU) – Not so long ago, people did not feel the need to lock their doors or windows. But times have changed, and so has the need to use locks for protection. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, most individuals do not have the proper lock security. Only half of Americans have dead-bolt locks on all of the entry doors to their homes and nearly one in five have none at all. The National Crime Prevention Council recommends checking and updating old locks on all doors and windows and replacing them with ones that provide protection from keys being duplicated without your knowledge, such as Medeco Security Locks. In addition, it advises you to make sure your locks have a long enough bolt so that the door cannot be pried open. Installing quality locks is the first line of defense against home burglaries since they can protect you against physical attack. Other steps can be taken to increase your security, as well. Here are some tips from the National Crime Prevention Council.

• Use your locks. Even the best locks can’t protect you if you don’t use them.

• Do some yard work. Trim hedges and bushes so thieves can’t hide out.

• Know your neighbors. Neighbors who look out for each other are among the best, and least expensive, defenses against neighborhood crime.

• Secure your spare. Leave your spare key with a trusted neighbor. Never hide it on the property. Burglars have more experience looking for keys than you do hiding them.

• Let there be light. Make sure all outside entrances — front, back and side — have good lighting so burglars can’t easily hide.

• Stop mail and paper deliveries. A pile of newspapers in the driveway is a clear sign to a thief that you’re away from home.

There are many notable structures and historic sites within the city that date from the 1850’s through the second half of the twentieth century. Some have received recognition, but many have not. Most are not protected against modification or destruction. Many properties have been lost or altered. You may view an incomplete list of endangered historic sites here.

Everyone is urged to review this list, keeping in mind that there is tremendous financial value in historic and architectural preservation. Tourism is a large contributor to Hillsboro’s economy, and much of its success depends upon the appeal of the unique buildings and houses in the city. Property values remain high when communities take pride in well-preserved neighborhoods.

The Commission encourages everyone to protect history when dealing with property in Hillsboro. The historical or architectural significance may not always be evident, so when in doubt, please notify the Preservation Commission prior to taking any action regarding a building or site.

Plan to attend a meeting of the Commission during the noon hour on the first Thursday of each month. Seeking to spread the word about preservation, representatives of the Commission are available to give presentations to any organization.
