Open Records Requests

Effective 9/2/25, all public information requests will be subject to applicable charge(s)/fee(s) as set by the Texas Attorney General's Office.  

In accordance with the Texas Public Information Act, Public Information Requests (PIRs) must be submitted in writing. Upon receipt the City will begin processing your request in the order in which it was received.

Public Information Requests should be for documents, or other information that is already in existence. The City of Hillsboro is not required to answer questions, perform legal research, or comply with a continuing request to supply information on a periodic basis.

The statutory requirements that apply to governmental bodies that have received requests for public information can be found in the Public Information Act, which is codified in Chapter 552 of the Texas Government Code. 

The City of Hillsboro will begin billing for all open records request effective as of September 2, 2025. The city's charges for public information are set by the Texas Attorney General's Office and are found at 1 Texas Administrative Code §§ 70.1-.12.

The requestor must respond to any written estimate of charges within 10 days of the date the city sent it or the request is considered automatically withdrawn.

If estimated costs exceed $100 the city may require a bond, prepayment or deposit.

Make a timely payment for all mutually agreed charges. The city can demand payment of overdue balances exceeding $100 or obtain a security deposit before processing additional requests from you.
