Reports To:  Water/Wastewater Superintendent

Objective                                                       

To ensure safe and efficient operation of the heavy equipment in the water and wastewater department when performing duties that are required to maintain the current level of the water and sewer service for the community.

General Statement of Duties                       

This position involves responsibility for operation large and valuable equipment.  Duties will include operating various types of heavy equipment engaged in the construction, repair and/or maintenance of water and sewer lines, and at times work that is needed done at the wastewater treatment plant; driving and ensuring the proper maintenance of all equipment is used.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities         

  1. Serves as primary operator of heavy equipment such as the backhoe, track hoe, dump truck, generators, and jet machines which are needed at the job sites.
  2. Performs preventative maintenance work and makes minor repair of equipment which includes welding, if needed.
  3. Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulic system, etc. and makes appropriate adjustments to be certain vehicle or equipment is in proper operating condition prior to leaving for the job site.
  4. Able to install and properly operate shoring equipment.  Able to operate and maintain the chop saw as needed when repairing water and sewer lines.
  5. Hauls gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials as needed.
  6. Assists in the construction, repair and installation of water and wastewater lines, trenches, and able to dig and clean out trenches.
  7. Needs to be able to assist in repairs of sidewalks, curbs and other concrete projects that are required while working on water and wastewater projects.
  8. Able to operate and maintain a pipe cutter.
  9. Able to install water and sewer pipe and replace driveway.
  10. Uses backhoe to load trucks, clean out creeks, when needed to repair or install water and sewer line and clean out the ditches.
  11. Operates mower to mow areas around the water towers, lift stations and wastewater treatment plant.
  12. Maintains safe working area by using appropriate personal protective equipment and observing safety procedures.
  13. Repair and maintain pumps in lift stations.

  1. Repair water and sewer line leaks and install lines.
  2. Assists with installing sewer taps, clean outs, and check valves.
  3. Assists with checking and maintaining the lift stations.
  4. Assist in installing and repairing manholes.
  5. Bleeds and flushes fire hydrants.
  6. When needed, will read meters, and re-reads of meters to verify original reading.
  7. Performs other such duties as may be assigned.

Physical Ability                                            

Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (10-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (50-100 pounds); also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; ability to use hands to handle or feel; and the ability to climb or balance.

Tasks require visual and sound perception; the ability to adjust focus between near and far; and the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors                                

Tasks may risk exposure to extreme weather conditions; exposure to fumes and airborne particles; exposure to moving mechanical parts; working in high places; exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electric shock; exposure to vibration; and working in loud to very loud conditions.   

Experience and Training                            

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months to one year related experience and/or training.

OR

Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certificates and Licenses Required           

Valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.

“C” Water and Wastewater Certificate preferred
