Objective

Be a warm, friendly, energetic and passionate person who loves providing quality customer service in an ever changing, never quiet, and always busy environment to children, birth through grade 12, and their families. Passion for and strong understanding of children’s and youth literature. Skilled in oral and written communication. Enjoy organizing a variety of programs and events for children of all ages and their caregivers. Skilled in the use of computers, phones, tablets, and other electronic devices. Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of community organizations and other city departments. Strong understanding of early childhood development and the knowledge to develop programs that support it. Desire to build a genuine rapport with our youngest library stakeholders and their families.

General Statement of Duties

This is a nonsupervisory position. Under the supervision of the Library Director, performs responsible and varied administrative and professional library work related to planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Youth Services Department, which serves patrons ranging in age from birth through grade twelve.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and supervises all programming for the Youth Services Department
    • Implement Early Childhood Development programming throughout the year
    • Perform story hours and other programs for children in order to encourage reading, viewing, and listening of library materials and to help create lifelong library users
    • Provide programs for tweens and Teens
    • Provides library service to the community and area schools through programs such as class visits, summer reading events, etc.
    • Plan and implement annual Summer Reading Program that provides fun, educational activities for students on summer break
  • In accordance with the Hillsboro City Library Collection Development Policy, the librarian selects materials for acquisition and withdrawal from the Youth Service’s Department print and non-print collections; supervises the organization, maintenance, preservation, withdrawal, and disposal of materials to build a quality collection that will be well utilized by the community
  • Provides reference and reader's advisory guidance to children, teens, parents, and teachers
  • Assists and instructs patrons in using library services, equipment, and facilities; including the use of the library’s online catalog and other electronic tools and resources
  • Submits to the Library Director budget for proposed programming and activities for youth, submits purchase order requisitions for Youth Service’s Department materials, equipment, and other proposed purchases that are within the scope of the library’s budget; and refers to the Library Director for payment invoices for Youth Service’s Department orders
  • Creates bibliographies, user guides, promotional materials, and publicity spotlighting Youth Service’s Department collections, services, and programs
  • Creates displays to enhance the library experience and to promote use of library resources
  • Maintains knowledge of the automated circulation and technical services systems and assists with circulation and technical services tasks, as needed
  • Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports for the Library Director
  • Interprets Hillsboro City Library policies and procedures to the public in a customer-friendly manner
  • Maintains and innovates the library’s youth and family-oriented outreach services, early childhood development, children, tween, and teen programs
  • Utilize the library’s TexShare Databases and other resources to assist patrons in answering reference questions

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Identifies reading trends among junior patrons
  • Attends conferences, workshops, and meetings and reads professional literature to stay informed on issues related to children's library services
  • Serves on professional and community committees, as requested, to advance the library and the library profession
  • Works collaboratively with a variety of community organizations and city departments
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must be able to work evening and weekend hours.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or fellow employees.  

Must have ability to relate well with people of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and dispositions in a professional manner.

Must be comfortable with learning new technologies and programs.

Must be comfortable with basic Microsoft Office Suite applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, etc.

It is desired to be familiar with Canva, TexShare Databases, MailChimp, Beanstack, Apollo Biblionix ILS, Yahoo, Google, Outlook, and many other web-based services or ability to learn.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Physical Ability

Tasks involve the ability to sit for extended periods of time, crouch, stoop, bend and squat frequently, the use of hands to handle or feel, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (10-25 pounds).

Acceptable Experience and Training

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Experience designing, planning and executing educational activities for children and adults in a learning and leadership environment.
  • Customer service experience showing empathy, good communication and problem-solving skills.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Consideration will be given to individuals currently pursuing a master's degree in library science.
